Family Homeschool: Math in the Kitchen and more Family Math

  • The Family homeschool has a tendency to keep a Mama busy. One great way to save time and energy is to combine your "to-do" list. For me, this sometimes means doing math, geography, or history in the kitchen. We use recipes to learn about other cultures, to add depth to our history studies, and to teach some basic math skills.

  • There are additional benefits that go along with this technique, of course, such as the time saved by preparing breakfast or dinner ahead of time and killing two birds with one stone, as well as spending time together and enjoying the family, and then there is the obvious . . . . . delicious outcome!

Spend some time in the kitchen with your kids this week and try making breakfast ahead of time. Use this free recipe (or other) and have the kids measure out ingredients. They will learn spacial reasoning, basic measurements, life skills - and you may just learn a thing or two about them. Most of all, enjoy your time together.
