As a homeschooling parent, one of the main responsibilities we have is
to ensure our student is getting adequate education in all core subject
areas. Are they at “grade level”? What
learning style works best? What are their strengths? Can you detect the warning
signs if the student is struggling? Do
you have an effective ways to attack the problem areas?
There are several things you can do help your child. Because each child is unique, they process information differently and learn differently. So one of the first thing you can do is, understand your child’s learning styles and needs. How does your child learn best? What keeps him engaged and makes it a bit fun for him?

Math is the subject that makes most homeschooling parents a little
weak-in-the-knees, yet Math is all around us! So how do you make sure your
student is at or above grade level? How do you make learning Math fun?
There are several things you can do help your child. Because each child is unique, they process information differently and learn differently. So one of the first thing you can do is, understand your child’s learning styles and needs. How does your child learn best? What keeps him engaged and makes it a bit fun for him?
Here are some of the learning styles you should consider,
-
Does your child learn best when someone actually teaches them one on one?
- Is your child more independent where he/she likes to go explore things on his own with just a little guidance from you?
- Does your child learn best when he/she can see, feel, hold or can easily relate to real-life examples?
- Does your child learn best with use of technology?
- Does your child learn best from the traditional textbooks?
- Does your child learn best when you put the math problems in context using real-life examples?
- Does your child learn best in a group setting where they interact with their peers and/or siblings?
- Does your child learn best in a quite setting or does he need that external stimulation with soft music or something similar?
- Does your child learn best when he/she talks out loud?
In most cases, you will find
children use a combination of multiple learning styles. So work with
your child and pick a learning style or combination of learning styles that
work most effectively and tailor the math curriculum that addresses the unique
needs of your child. Create an environment that is comfortable and aids his
leaning.
